Electronic Security vs Cybersecurity: Understanding the Difference and Why You Need Both

The terms “electronic security” and “cybersecurity” are sometimes confused, even though they cover complementary but distinct concerns. Understanding this difference helps build a genuinely complete security strategy for the business.

Electronic security: protecting the physical world

Video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, fire detection: electronic security protects premises, equipment and people against physical risks — intrusion, theft, fire.

Cybersecurity: protecting the digital world

Cybersecurity, meanwhile, protects information systems, data and communications against digital threats — hacking, ransomware, data leaks.

Why the two are linked in practice

Unsecured physical access to a server room renders the best remotely deployed cybersecurity protection useless. Conversely, a video surveillance system is itself a potential vulnerability if it is not properly secured digitally.

One strategy, two dimensions

UTS International is positioned across both dimensions at once — IT infrastructure, cybersecurity and electronic security — to build coherent protection rather than two separate strategies that don’t communicate with each other.
